In East Ayrshire, the Gen+ programme is proving instrumental in supporting both learners and teachers to develop their meta-skills.
Overview of programme delivery
Through embedding the Gen+ programme within their Science Department, Grange Academy is cultivating the perfect learning space for young people to grow through bespoke learning pathways, whilst their teachers have the opportunity to develop their own understanding and ensure consistency.
Through ‘Skills School’, young people work together to develop their skills for learning, life and work.

Impacts and metrics
Grange Academy has seen positive developments through delivering Meta-Skills to young people through their Skills School. Young people are more able to work collaboratively and are benefiting from bespoke courses designed by their teachers.
The teachers delivering the Gen+ Programme have grown in their confidence of meta-skills, and credit having the programme resources and content to hand.

The new, flexible delivery model has suited Grange Academy:
“We started off with Trailblazer, which we ran as a full unit, then this time we’ve taken wee snippets of different topics and courses and built them in, just from what we’ve seen that pupils are going to benefit from.”
EVIDENCED across the school
Lauren highlights the impact that the Gen+ programme has had in terms of learners collaborating and working together; reflecting on seeing them participate in a group activity, they “realise they’re no longer individuals and are having to work as part of a team.”
This in turn has seen an improvement in learners referring to meta-skills outside of the classroom.
why it works
Within the curriculum, there’s always a pressure to complete the content within your success criteria, however Lauren highlights that Gen+ allows you to take a more relaxed approach and enjoy delivering the programme.
Due to having a tailored delivery model, learners are able to work at a pace that suits them: “the pupils seem more relaxed when they come into the class as well and they really seem to enjoy it”
