What are Meta-Skills?
In today’s fast-changing world, students need more than academic knowledge – they need skills that help them adapt, think critically, and work well with others. Gen+ is leading the way in Scotland by helping students develop these essential “Meta-Skills” through innovative programmes that support learners and teachers.
What Are Meta-Skills?
Meta-Skills are lifelong abilities that help people face challenges, solve problems, and keep learning. Unlike technical skills, which may become outdated; Meta-Skills stay relevant no matter how the world changes.
Gen+ focuses on nine key Meta-Skills:
- Communication: Expressing ideas clearly and listening actively.
- Organisation: Managing time, setting priorities, and staying focused.
- Resilience: Overcoming setbacks and staying positive.
- Collaboration: Working well in teams and respecting others.
- Initiative: Taking action and making decisions with confidence.
- Leadership: Inspiring others and acting with values and purpose.
- Adaptability: Embracing change and learning from challenges.
- Creativity: Thinking outside the box to solve problems.
- Critical Thinking: Asking smart questions and making sound decisions.
Supporting Scotland’s Curriculum
Gen+ aligns closely with Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence (CfE), which aims to prepare students for life by focusing on transferable skills. Programmes like Gen+ Learn for students aged 9–14 and Gen+ Teach for educators help schools incorporate these skills into lessons. This supports national goals, including Skills Development Scotland’s Skills 4.0 agenda and Developing the Young Workforce (DYW).
Making a Difference
Gen+ is already making an impact in 17 local authority areas, with Inverclyde Council leading the way by introducing the programme in all local secondary schools, and Aberdeen City Council using the Gen+ programme for Probationer Teachers practitioner enquiry. By combining resources with classroom discussions, Gen+ ensures students gain practical skills alongside their academic learning.
By putting meta-skills at the heart of education, Gen+ is helping create a future-ready generation prepared for both work and life challenges.
